A thanka painting is a religious object and a medium for expressing Buddhist ideals.
These paintings are executed on cotton canvas and often framed or brocaded with silk cloth. They depict images of different gods, goddesses, and significant philosophy related to Buddhism which was hung in a monastery or a family altar and carried by lamas in ceremonial processions. Regarded as the essence of reverence, these paintings are a medium through which the highest ideals of Buddhism are evoked.
In Tibetan the word 'than' means flat and the suffix 'ka' stands for painting. The Thanka is thus a kind of painting done on flat surface but which can be rolled up when not required for display.
